W4T2: Restaurant Review

Located in a humble corner in Bukit Tunku, this bakery-cum-cafe first begun its operations in 2014, serving up coffee and pastries for the local community. Kenny Hills Bakers is both my family and my favourite brunch spot since late 2019, and it's become a family tradition. Our go-to branch is their original, but newly renovated Bukit Tunku branch; however, they have opened up two other branches in Ampang and Desa Park City. Whether you’re craving for an authentic pain au chocolat or a hearty breakfast - Kenny Hills has it all!

Squeezed amongst a few shop lots, its clean white exterior is not hard to spot as they have signs pointing you in the right direction. You’ll know when you’ve arrived when you can see a beautiful mural of classic books crawling with healthy green foliage. As the queues can get long during the weekend, why not kill some time taking photos of the murals or with the murals itself? You’ll eventually find yourself seated in no time. Since its renovation, Kenny Hills Bakers Bukit Tunku branch now seats both indoors and outdoors, so whether you prefer to dine al fresco or air-conditioned, they have you covered.
While waiting, you will see some of their staff dressed in prim and proper black aprons zipping up and down the location. Even though they seem like they are always on their feet and rushing to fulfil an order, they are extremely friendly and patient with your requests. As they move back and forth, they will always return to ask about your meal and your experience. Although the wait time can be as long as half an hour, once you are seated, their speedy service makes it all up. I prefer their indoor dining as I can see their spreads as well as get a glimpse of their wood-fired ovens - which is perfect as I get to eat with my senses!
The indoor atmosphere is warm and inviting. You can spot all kinds of folk in here, from those who just finished their morning biking session off Bukit Tunku or those on a date with their significant other. It is also family and kid-friendly so bring the whole gang along (while adhering to the SOPs of course).

Kenny Hills menu varies according to location. Their Bukit Tunku kitchen whips up a large spread for breakfasts such as their signature Western Big Breakfast (RM36) to local delights such as Basmati Nasi Lemak (RM28). The Big Breakfast is best shared amongst two as it features their organic toast (sourdough) along with the classic breakfast spread of sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans. They are also generous with their portion as they include an additional two options of salmon or beef. As a meat lover, I choose beef bacon, hash browns and two sunny side ups! There really is nothing better than having a hearty breakfast to start the day with.
If you’re feeling light, they also have a wide spread of sandwiches, waffles and toasties - with my personal favourite being the Smoked Salmon and Avocado Croissant (RM25), you simply can’t go wrong with that combination!

It really isn’t breakfast until you’ve had your coffee! Kenny Hills Bakers brew premium illy Coffee so you can get your daily dose of Arabica brew. The best way to enjoy a cup of coffee is in its purest form, hence I went with an iced Long Black (RM12) as well as their Flat White (RM12). Both bring out different flavours in the beans. There is so much to shout about when it comes to good coffee and Kenny Hills does it right! Their brew brings out the bittersweetness in the coffee beans and balances out a grease-heavy meal like the big breakfast. Their breakfast menu runs until 6 pm so don’t worry if you feel like having a croissant at 2 pm, they will gladly whip one up for you.

If you find yourself arriving just in time for brunch or lunch, check out their lunch menu as it is equally delicious as their breakfast! Their lunch menu features a Western spread like pasta, soups, burgers and pizzas. During one of my visits, I got to enjoy a Truffle Mac and Cheese (RM35) as well as Seafood Aglio Olio (RM42) - and they were both delicious. They do not skimp on the truffle flavour for their mac and cheese as each bite fills you up with warm, gooey cheese finished with strong notes of truffle. Speaking of their generous portions, biting into their seafood Aglio olio is like taking a breath of the sea. Not only is their seafood fresh, but even the pasta is infused with seafood so you know you are getting the full experience.

What is to absolutely die for at Kenny Hills is their Organic Wood Fired Sourdough pizzas. Each pizza is handcrafted to order, so do expect about 20-30 minutes for their preparation - but every minute is so worth the wait! Kenny Hills also allows you to do a little half and half - to which I chose a mix of Al Funghi and Seafood (RM48). Now while the combination feels a little weird, each slice stands out on their own. Their generosity is definitely something to sing about as each slice contained a burst of mushroom or seafood flavour. The crust is thin but it carries the weight of the sauce well, not once did any of the parts fall off the crust - a personal indicator of good pizza.

I hope you saved some room for dessert because their array of cakes and pastries are a marvel. I felt like a kid in the candy store while looking through the glass counter. Some of their speciality desserts include a Peach Strudel (RM18) and they also have some local seasonal flavours such as Onde-Onde Cake (RM16). However, my personal favourite has to be their Tiramisu. They serve up to two options, one with alcohol and one without so don’t worry my Muslim friends! Even though it’s early in the day, Tiramisu with Alcohol (RM18) is still a great choice. Each bite features an explosive array of flavours from the bitterness of the cocoa powder, the sweet cream filling and at the end, a soft alcohol-infused sponge - simply heaven on Earth.
Overall, my experience with Kenny Hills Bakers has always been wonderful. While the prices lean towards a more premium side, it comes at the price of locally sourced ingredients and in-house bakers. This is my favourite spot whenever there is something to celebrate hence, it holds a very special meaning to me. With the current lockdown situations, they have moved online and offer delivery services as well so what are you waiting for? Get your fix of good coffee and pastries now!
